I would like to talk about the Hinamizawa syndrome, Level 5, and the causes of the degradation of the mental state. So far I've found that there are two causes of Level 5: Prolonged separation from the Hinamizawa area and stress. I think that Miyo Takano may have developed a way to agitate the parasitic virus some how, because Jiro Tomitake died within the Hinamizawa area and with minimal or no stress. I'm curious as to why Rena was able to return to normal after her laps into Level 5 one year prior to the events of the anime without the medication developed by Kyosuke Irie. Any thoughts on the subject are welcome, even if it's criticism.

I find the whole Hinamizawa syndrome to be quite interesting. Maybe Tomitake dies because he wasn't living in Hinamizawa? I think he was living in Tokyo or Kyoto..forgot which. It's pretty strange that Rena has returned to normal and that Satoko has not..

I believe he returns to the Hinamizawa area to avoid falling into Level 5. Or perhaps he was never effected and the sudden introduction of the parasite caused his rapid decline. Satoko was given medication to suppress the symptoms of Level 5, witch explains her acting odd when her uncle returned.

Holy crap!Something about Hinamizawa syndrome I don't know! You know I never really thought about it... mostly because the condition of extreme paranoia and homicidal behavior are the most interesting aspects of Hinamizawa syndrome. Most likely the other Levels are varying stages of paranoia, from thinking friends are keeping secrets to believing they are putting things in your food. On that note I would like to bring up the needle from the first Chapter, is it real or was Keiichi's heightened state of paranoia creating a reason to distrust Mion and Rena? This is a question that has bugged me for the longest time.

Like I say before I'm not sure, but it would make sense that the other Levels are the varying stages of paranoia. For example Level 1 is where Keiichi was suspicious of Rena when he asked about the murder at the dam, and Level 4 is where he started carrying the bat around.

Like I say before I'm not sure, Uhhhhh I wasn't asking you anymore, I'm asking if someone else knows. Of course again if no one knows, please change questions. but it would make sense that the other Levels are the varying stages of paranoia. For example Level 1 is where Keiichi was suspicious of Rena when he asked about the murder at the dam, and Level 4 is where he started carrying the bat around. Oh ok thank you, this gives a little better view on the levels of Hinamizawa syndrome. ^^

This just in!! The Irie Clinic did indeed develop a drug that hastens the development of the syndrome. This fact was confirmed in episode 21 of Higurashi no naku koro ni.

Also, it seems it takes 48 hours for the syndromes terminal symptoms to appear.

This is just a theory on the Hinamizawa Syndrome, of the 5 possable levels. But here it Goes, and those who have'nt seen Higurashi or Kai before. This has spoilers in it,so don't read if you hate spoilers:
Level 0: Everyone in Hinamizawa is at this level by default, and in each arc. No Paranoid Delusions or Homicidal plots.
Level 1: Basicly what starts this level is, when someone menchions a murder or an accident, and starts to become alittle suspious. Like when Takano kept rambling on about the deaths after each Cotton Drifting Festival.
Level 2: Mild illusions and Hallucinations develop; Symptoms of Paranoia and Delusions develop. I think this could be why we see Rena's cat looking eyes, Keiichi's seeing Illusions.
Level 3: Violent Hallucinations develop, Delusions and Paranoia are persistent than before, Now they start to believe that protecting themselfs is the basic form of survival by killing the perpetrators, even though its a hallucination. Remember the Needle in Keiichi's Ohagi? That was a Hallucination, and the syrindge that Mion had was acctually the marker she used for the early episodes Punishment Game.
Level 4: Violent Hallucinations become persistant, Delusions and Paranoia are at extreme, and possability of Schizoprenic symptoms. Because Shion hears voices at the end of episode 21.
Level 5: Pretty Obvious, They Claw their own throat out.

And also much of those times when their Hinamizawa Syndrome level is up, your seeing the characters Hallucinations, probably why many people watching it on youtube are confused. The really freaky Hallucination I found was, when Keiichi was talking to Ooishi on the phone and Rena was outside saying "I'am sorry." Yet when the camra shifts to the outside view, Rena was'ent talking at all, her lips are moving yet No audio.
